Base Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition of works by Hideyoshi Sakurai.
It has already been fourteen years since Hideyoshi Sakurai has passed away much to our regret.
His works are made up of three primary colors coated in many layers on cotton canvas for further penetration and lamination,
and he has received great acclaim for this consistent and one of a kind painting style that was never influenced by the current of the time.
In an instant before turning black after stratification and mixture of colors, feeble color newly make an appearance from the depth,
yet the surface of painting sustains its tranquil aspect in spite of being multi-layered. Many of us have been deeply fascinated by his works.
The research of his works has been continuously advanced even after his death in 1999,
and the publication of catalogue became reality with the cooperation of many people involved.
In the past, Base Gallery has held five exhibitions of the works by Hideyoshi Sakurai since the fist solo exhibition in 1992.
In commemoration of the publication of the catalogue with undermentioned content,
we are delighted to organize his retrospective exhibition for the first time in a long while.
It has been more than ten years since his last exhibition at Base Gallery back in 1999 just before that he passed away sadly.
We cordially would like to invite you to join us once again at this exhibition with unalterably beautiful pieces even after more than a decade.
