Base Gallery cordially invites you all to the opening exhibition entitled “ZAI SHOKU KEN BI – ART & MONEY”.

Having been relocated to the financial district of Kabutocho, this exhibition tries to reveal the love-hate relationship between art and money.
Sacred and pure-looking art and commonly used money seem antithetical at a glance. However, they can be the closest kin as they both are the created fiction. Art is only a piece of paper or canvas with some drawings on, and money is also just a piece of paper with established trust as valuable material.

Our life itself is a whole bunch of fictions. As long as the life has a fictional structure, art and money can be regarded as similar existences in it.
But people in financial community smile cynically and say “I am not intersted in art as it is no use for me.”

So this exhibition is to rethink the distance and difference between the two. Quite a few artists have realised those and a number of artworks have been made.

This exibition starts on 1st November 2004, which is the day of introduction of new Japanese Yen bank notes.
