BASE GALLERY is pleased to present “FUKO,” a solo exhibition of new works by Minao Abe.

This is her first exhibition at the gallery in five years.
In the past several years, she has participated in “project N 51” Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery,
“VOCA 2014 -The Vision of Contemporary Art” The Ueno Royal Museum,
“Floating Nature” organized by CPUE2014 Tama Art University, “Embracing for Painting” Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo,
and foreign art fairs such as Art Cologne, ArteFiera Bologna, Arco Madrid, Expo Chicago, just to name some.

Minako Abe’s process starts with importing images of landscape into a computer.
Then she twists and skews them arbitrarily.
The distorted image projected on canvas is masked by masking tape layer by layer and painted by roller manually.
Slightly curled edges formed by chance in a sense during that process bring the surface of her painting homogenized smooth and matte textures.
Her landscape paintings thoroughly lose individual names of each location and now present a significant transfiguration with great wind and
abundant scattered light based on green and blue. The adapted landscape turns into anonymous scenery so to speak,
and it emerges as scenic beauty in front of us in the right meaning. Her landscapes, as being our surroundings,
objectify ourselves and make us reaffirm the true nature of our memories.

Minako Abe will be participating in the solo exhibition at Chofu City Cultural Hall Tazukuri in autumn this year.
We cordially invite you to join us at her fourth exhibition at BASE GALLERY.
